If you do something bizarre with your newsposter which causes the
"Newsgroups" line to be set to your userid, you will get fewer replies.

A Kamtronics TNC-2 costs about $125. It doesn't have a complete
implementation, but it can get some WEFAX. I'm not sure what kind of
software you need.

: 2. Signal encryption, so only A and B can chat, no one else can listen to.
This is *****STRICTLY BIG TIME ILLEGAL!!!***** You will loose your license.
: 3. A automatic TNC that can manage voice/data/fax switching, when connected

Although this is not a real answer, the quickest thing I can tell you
is that it's not like the public switched telco network. Voice mail you
say. I've not seen that on radio. I suggest you contact your local
packet users group to find out exactly what it's about. Not that I don't
want to tell you, I guess if you mail me I could send you some private
E-Mail HIHI.

For packet, yes, but again, I'm concerened about exactly what type of voice

Firstly, if you have not already done so, stop by one of the local
amatuer radio clubs. They will help you out. They can point you at
the approprate info, especially if you ave not yet obtained a license.
If not, write the FCC. They will send you all the regulations. From that,
it will be clear what is possible, and why.
You should be aware that you will require the U.S. equivalent of an
Advanced Amatuer License to have an automated transmitter. To operate
any transmitter, of course, you need a license.

Hi all.
I've obtained a Mocom 35 440 rig which we wish to use as a 9600
user port radio. I'm interested if anyone has has sucess with mods on this.
It came with documentation on how to perform a mod for 9600, but local users
who have tried to perform the mod on their Mocom 35s say they have had
little luck. Any info would be appreciated.

Absolutely correct - it is a fabulous BBS system and Bob Arasmith
deserves high honor for it. If I recall, the system actually runs
on THREE Sun machines. It is totally awesome. Since moving from
a QTH close to the N0ARY BBS, I have not been able to ween myself -
so, I maintain it as my home bbs and remotely access it via Internet.
Oh yeah, he has an Internet Gateway on the thing as well.

As well as other BBS sysops running Bob's code - like me.

Subject: Problems with PacComm Handi-Packet
To: ham-digital@ucsd.edu
Hiya all,
I've got a bit of a problem with my
PacComm Handi-Packet unit - it now only
dishes out the first 40 characters of its
sign on message - I'm pretty sure most of it is OK
and the RS232 all seems OK.
I wonder if anyone else had trouble with their
PacComm unit with a similar fault?
Looking at the Z80 processor address and datalines
It looks very like the unit is stuck ing a small
look - presumably checking the status of an internal
flag or something - once the initial 40 or so chars
are spewed onto the screen then the processor goes into a
Read,Read,Read, Write loop - I think this is consistant
with it checking a register comparing it - failing and
looping. but woulf appreciate sympathy and constructive
points of view...
Thanks

It may not be the audio from the TNC -- the 5100's data connection
port has been changed recently. I own two 5100's -- one is a year old
and one is a month old. The "old" 5100 works perfectly well with the
TNC wired into the data port on the back of the radio. The "new" 5100
keys up the transmitter but doesn't provide any audio output when it
transmits.
I called Yaesu about this and it seems that they've changed the data
port on the back of the radio to allow direct 9600 baud connection.
In doing this, they made it impossible to run 1200 and 2400 baud
packet through the data port. Wiring directly to the mike connector
does still work, so that's the "correct" way to do it now. The
manuals haven't been updated to reflect the new hardware yet.
Bummer. Now I've got two "identical" radios and two distinctly
different ways to plug in a TNC.
